I still remember the day I arrived home after being diagnosed.
I had no idea what celiac or gluten even meant.
Honestly, I was convinced it had something to do with sugar…
Luckily (I think!), I was diagnosed while living in Italy, a country that really gets celiac disease.
The awareness there is incredible:
– The Italian government gives a monthly allowance to people with celiac disease to help with the extra cost of gluten-free food.
– The AIC (Italian Celiac Association) was my first stop.
They educated me, guided me, and helped me find safe places to eat.
While I’m no longer a member (mostly because I no longer live in Italy), I still use their resources every time I visit.
You can even pay a small fee to access their Gluten-Free Directory for two weeks, totally worth it if you’re traveling in Italy!
Fast forward 16 years, and I’m still learning.
Being a celiac is a lifelong journey, but one that hasn’t stopped me from:
– Traveling the world 🌍
– Discovering new foods 🍲
– Always eating in a safe and strictly **gluten-free** manner ✅
